Team Kathryn Lee for Camp Kita
Daniel Seung Lee / Camp Kita on Loon Pond
Team Kathryn Lee is a continuous fundraising effort that supports Camp Kita, a tuition free summer camp for children and teens who have lost a loved one to suicide. This fundraiser was organized in honor of my late mother, Kathryn Lee, who lost her mental health battle in August 2009.
Some of you may have never got the chance to meet Kathryn but she was beloved by many. Her entire life's dedication was to her family as she took being a stay at home mom very seriously. She was an amazing cook and host (many holidays were hosted by my mom), an avid golfer, a queen of karaoke, a lover of gardening-- always talking and singing to her plants (because it helps them grow better!), and an extremely talented fabergé egg artist. To people who didn't know her well, she may have come off timid and quiet but to loved ones, you knew her as being playful and goofy, while being kind and generous. She spent an ungodly amount of time in front of the mirror, giving herself a blowout every morning, making sure her hair was perfectly coiffed (like mother, like son). She expressed her love for me and my brother through food, spoiling us every night with a meticulously prepared, home-cooked meal tailored to whatever we were craving. She lived her entire life in service of others, especially her children.
Currently, the camp is working towards their goal to build a permanent camp location in Maine but this team will continue to raise funds for Camp Kita in the years to come so they can continue their mission. Camp Kita offers a safe place for children to grieve and process their emotions while also experiencing the joy and fun of summer camp.In August 2024, I spent a week at Camp Kita volunteering as a mentor. There are no words to perfectly describe my time there but all I can say is that I fell deeply in love with my group of kids (ages 8-10). I'm so grateful these kids have a place to go every summer and be surrounded by other kids and adults who they can talk to and feel understood. The camp primarily focuses on grief work (daily group therapy sessions and optional 1-on-1 counseling by our amazing volunteer mental health professionals) and restorative work (activities and exercises that help the kids move forward, rebuild, and restore their lives).
I lost my mom when I was 20 years old, and at the time, I thought that was too young to lose a mom. I cannot imagine having to go through losing her during my childhood or teenage years, and my heart goes out to those who have experienced that loss at such a young age. I hope that with this fundraiser, my mom's legacy of selflessness lives on by supporting these kids as they heal.
Thank you for your contribution. Every little bit counts.
If you're not able to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser as that will be tremendously helpful meeting our goal.
